KAYAKING

Kayaking Club

Basic Information:

The Kayak sports club offers entry level instruction to beginner
kayakers. We start small, working with the beginners on lakes and
rivers, teaching the strokes and concepts as well as how to maneuver
the craft. Once the kayaker feels comfortable in the boat we take them
through a progressive kayak instruction program teaching the how to run
small class 1 and 2 rapids. Once the kayaker feels comfortable on class
2 we take it up a notch and teach the how to run class 3 rapids. Once a
kayaker feels comfortable on class 3 it is up to them to push them
selves to run harder whitewater ie class 4 and 5.
We can only teach the basic river running skills everything else must
be learned by the participant and his/her on pace.

The primary goal of the instruction program is to allow participants
the opportunity to challenge themselves while enjoying a beautiful
outdoor setting. As well as provide experienced kayakers to our Kayak
Team. Our kayak team consists of the most experienced kayakers in the
club. These kayakers compete in a variety of competitions all over the
southeast.

How to join:

Although most of our new members join at Fall get on board day, it is
still possible to join the club throughout the year. If you would like
to join the club, just email Luke Scott at lgscott@bama.ua.edu  and
put "Club membership" in the subject line. There is no cost for club
membership or instruction, all of the instructors are volunteers and do
it out of the love for the sport of kayaking.

Practice Schedule:

Roll Practice and weekly paddle sessions:
The Kayak Club meets once a week to take a flat water instruction
paddle on one of the many bodies of water around Tuscaloosa. These
meetings will be announced via our email list one week prior to the
trip. After daylight savings time we will have a weekly roll session in
the pool at the aquatics center.

Trips:
The Kayak Club offers trips to its members throughout the year.
Students wanting to participate in these trips must attend weekly
sessions in order to have the skills necessary to run the rivers. Trips
will be announced via the club email list and are subject to change at
any moment due to constantly changing weather conditions.
